Ezekiel 33:2-3, “Son of man, speak to your people [the Israelite captives in Babylon] and say to them, When I bring the sword upon a land and the people of the land take a man from among them and make him their watchman, If when he sees the sword coming upon the land, he blows the trumpet and warns the people…” The sword is representative of judgement. Whenever God dealt with Israel, He sent an enemy to them with the sword. The sword, for us, may not be a human but it can be this book. The sword of this word can cut sharper than any two-edged sword. This word can bring judgement in your life. This word can judge you. You need to see this.
Verse 4, “Then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. If when he sees the sword coming upon the land, he blows the trumpet and warns the people.” Don’t miss that!
Remember what I read to you in Joel? It said, “Blow the trumpet in Zion and sound an alarm in my holy mountain. Then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.” In other words, when you sit in church in 2020, it is not like you sat in church during 2019. Because, 2020 is a different day! God is speaking but he’s not just throwing out good morsels of feel good messages, he is declaring his Word! He is speaking his Word to us.
He says there that the watchmen had to sound an alarm and warn the people and if they didn’t take heed to it, then the sword came upon their own head. God’s people, today, go to church but they don’t always hear. Because we hear what we want to hear. We hear what we want to hear to make us feel good. Any church in America, today, that’s going to be the remnant church, will make its people uncomfortable through the Word. If I make you comfortable I have done you a disservice. If I make you comfortable in this day, I have tricked you and been like Jeremiah where I prophesied “peace, peace, where there is no peace.” This is why we are called to a sober time of repentance and prayer.
